A Place to Call Home // Part 7

A Place to Call Home // Part 7
~~~
"I knew you would find me here."
"Then, why did you come here?" Andi climbed the fence next to Josie.
They both sat on the top railing of the fence. A water trough was below them, filled with fresh water for the horses. The horses roamed the pasture land, grazing on dark green blades of grass. Shasta looked up for a moment before returning to his munching.
"I don't know."
"Well, maybe you wanted to tell me something?" Andi felt so close to getting Josie to open up, but she didn't want to push her. Opening up to a stranger took guts. And even though Andi knew that she could be trusted, Josie didn't know that.
A moment passed and Andi wondered if she should just leave the troubled girl by herself. But, spotting a tear trailing the girls face, Andi stayed.
"I-I don't know you." She began, "But you seem like a really nice lady. I mean, you fed us and made us sleep inside your house. I don't want to go back to that orphanage. Only, I don't know where to go. When our mother died, I was eight, but I remember what she told me. She said that I was the oldest and it was up to me to keep us kids together. I've made sure they never can  separate us when we ran away."
Josie sighed, and Andi patted her shoulder. It was obvious the pain she had been through at such an early age.
"Then there's Nora. She stopped talking soon after we were taken to the orphanage. I think it's just her way to deal with all the moving around so much. What do I do? We don't have anywhere to go..." A sob ended the girls storytelling. Andi was heartbroken for the girl.
"I know you feel alone right now, Josie." Andi said, hoping to lighted her load even a little, "But trust me, you are never alone. Not now, not ever. God promises in His Word, that He will never leave you or forsake you. I believe God made it possible for you to come across Memory Creek Ranch for a reason."
"You do?"
"Yes, I do. And I don't just thinks so, I know so. Josie, what would you think of becoming part of my family? I have a brother who is a lawyer, I think with the right paperwork, Justin can make it possible for you, Bobby, and Nora to be adopted by Riley and I. Would you like to be our kids?" Andi held her breath. Her and Riley had prayed long and hard the night before. Where God guides, He provides.
"You would do that for us?" Josie brushed away a tear from rolling down her cheek.
"Would you give us a chance to be your parents?"
"I can't believe it! You mean, we actually get to stay together. No more running? No more sleeping in abandoned buildings? I think this is a dream!" Josie, a new light shining in her eyes, blinked away a sudden rush of tears. Only this time, happy ones.
Josie energetically leaned over and gave Andi a bear hug, knocking them both off balance.
Before Andi could realize what was happening, she and Josie found themselves plunged in the water trough. Grasping for a breath, Andi looked into Josie's equally as shocked face, and couldn't stop the giggles from erupting.
"It looks like you got your bath early!"
~~~

One month later, after paperwork was complete, Andi stood in her kitchen. It was a typical Tuesday morning with her family.

"Do you need help making flapjacks?" Josie asked.

Andi smiled, "Thank you, I'd love some help. Why don't you start the batter."

She smiled at her oldest daughter, ever the helpful one. Andi asked Nora to sit at the table while she tied her shiny, red curls into a ponytail. Bobby occupied Izzy on the floor, playing with bright colored ABC blocks while Riley gulped his morning coffee.

Nora turned around in her chair and looked at Andi like she always did with that sweet, dimpled smile. And then, in a tiny voice, she said the four sweetest words a mother could ever hear.

"I love you, Mama."

Deuteronomy 31:6 "Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you."

The End! That concludes A Place to Call Home. What did you think of it? Comment Below how you thought the ending was! I will admit, it was a little rushed, but all short stories must come to a end... Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this piece of fan fiction!  If you haven’t read the Circle C Adventures by Susan K. Marlow , I totally recommend reading them!!

A Place to Call Home // Part 6

A Place to Call Home // Part 6

Riley gave Izzy to Andi, who then set her in the high chair inside the kitchen where she could keep an eye on her.

As soon as Riley took the older children outside to do chores, Andi turned to the little girl clutching their flour sack, the same one they had tried to steal food with, the night before. Whatever is inside that bag, it's all they have to their name. It was a sad thought, but Andi knew that flour sack meant a lot to the kids.

"Why don't you leave your bag on the pallet, Nora. Then I will help you wash your hands." Andi smiled at the timid girl. She look at her with wide eyes and did as she was told.

Nora came around to the sink and Andi grabbed a kitchen chair for her to stand on. After all the dirt washed clean from her small hands, Andi gave her a wooden spoon and asked her to stir the biscuit dough. Oatmeal was for breakfast, but they would make biscuits for lunch and Andi liked to be prepared. Watching Nora awkwardly mix the flour and butter together, Andi poured a cup of buttermilk into a glass measuring cup.

"How old are you, Nora?" She asked. Hesitant to pry, but more so curious.

Nora, not taking her eyes off of her task, held up one hand showing all five fingers.

"You're five years old?"

Nora confirmed with a nod.

Andi continued the one sided conversation, "Nora is a pretty name."

The girl smiled.

I wonder why she doesn't speak? I know she understands what I'm saying. Andi held the questions inside of her all throughout breakfast.

Deciding the children would all take baths, Andi gave Bobby and Riley the job of carrying water to the house from the well. Josie and Andi started washing the dishes from breakfast. It seemed like there was a never ending flow of dishes constantly needing to be done.

"Nora, would you mind playing with little Izzy for me?"

At Nora's eager nod, Andi handed the happy baby to her and watched as Nora sat her on the sofa and played with Izzy's rag doll.

"Do you like horses, Josie?" Andi spoke to the girl’s rigid, pointy shoulders hunched over the soapy water. She hoped to find a common ground with the oldest orphan. Josie seemed so bitter, so hardened by the reality of her world.

"Yes."

At least we are making some progress... "Me too! My horse, Shasta, is such a joy to me. I will let you ride him if you'd like?"

"I'd like that." She whispered.

"Lets plan a time then." Andi felt like she was making some head way with getting her to open up, "Josie, do you mind me asking why Nora doesn't talk?"

Andi looked at the small girl that had been occupying her thoughts. Nora bounced Izzy on her lap, a strand of dirty, red hair hung over her left eye. Andi followed the child’s gaze to the bookcase that Riley had made for her to store her many favorite books. A black leather Bible sat on top. I wonder what she is thinking right now...

A moment of silence passed before Andi turned back to the sink where Josie should have been washing dishes. That girl!

She was gone. No where to be found.

Stay tuned for the last part of this short story coming at ya in a couple days! Who is your favorite kid out of the four (Josie, Bobby, Nora, or Izzy)? Comment below!

A Place to Call Home // Part 5

A Place to Call Home // Part 5

Early the next morning, Andi awakened to the sound of quiet laughter and whispering. Curious, she quickly got dressed and tiptoed into the other room to see what was so funny.

Andi smiled when she saw Riley and Bobby playing a game of checkers at the kitchen table. Just because we talked about it last night, doesn't mean they would want to be apart of our family. She reminded herself before the scene before her got to her head.

Riley was holding Izzy who giggled each time Bobby made a funny face when it was his turn to move the checker piece. Josie and Nora were still sound asleep on their pallet, or at least, they pretended to be sleeping. For a fleeting moment, Andi let herself imagine that the three orphans were her and Riley's children, and that this was a typical Tuesday morning with her family.

"Do you need help making flapjacks?" Josie would ask her.

Andi would smile, "Thank you, I'd love some help. Why don't you start the batter."

She would then smile at her oldest daughter, ever the helpful one. She'd ask Nora to sit at the table while she tied her shiny, red curls into a ponytail. Bobby would occupy Izzy on the floor, playing with bright colored ABC blocks while Riley gulped his morning coffee.

Nora would eventually turn around in her chair and look at Andi like she always did with that sweet, dimpled smile. In a tiny voice, she'd say the four sweetest words a mother could ever hear.

"I love you, Mama."

"Andi? Are you okay?" Riley asked his wife.

His words snapped Andi back to the present and away from her daydream. Shaking her head, she blinked and looked into Riley's concerned face.

"Yes, I'm fine. Just deep in thought, I suppose."

"Are you sure?" Riley gently led her to the table and pulled out a chair for her, then sat down beside her, "Why are you crying?"

"I am?" She swiped at her damp face with the back of her hand. Why does a silly daydream have me all chocked up? Crying like this is something Melinda would do, not me.

"Who's hungry?" She changed subjects, standing up to start the oatmeal on a back burner. Riley read through her overly cheerful tone. But he didn't comment on it, if anything, played along.

"All right, kids, who wants to help me with the morning chores?" Riley asked, looking expectantly at the two oldest. Both looked at each other, not sure if they wanted to volunteer or not.

"Grab your shoes, you both can help me this morning. Nora, you can stay inside and help Andi with breakfast, does that sound good?" The little girl nodded, her red matted curls bouncing with each movement. Her hair needs to be brushed, Andi noted, and they all could use a bath!

On a scale of 1-10, how did you like Part 5? Here's a little secret, be sure to remember Andi's daydream. *winks* Comment below and tell me, when is the last time you had pancakes (flapjacks) for breakfast?

A Place to Call Home // Part 4

A Place to Call Home // Part 4

"You're a girl!" Riley was shocked.

Standing with her arms crossed and with a withering glare pinned on Riley, Joe refused to speak. But she didn't have to speak for Andi to see that she was, indeed, not a boy.

"I told you someone would find out..." Bobby whined.

Andi blew out a exasperated breath, "I need some answers. Now."

She drug Bobby and Nora back to the table.

"Sit." Andi instructed with no room for argument, then turned to Joe.

"Come to the table. What is your real name, Joe?"

Head down, Joe seemed to find her tattered shoes very interesting at the moment. Andi knew that Joe would not be the one to leak any information about them, so she turned to the more talkative one.

"What is your sister's name, Bobby?" Andi looked at Joe who rolled her eyes, "And while you're at it, why don't you tell me why you were in our barn in the first place, and who you ran away from."

Unsure of how much to tell, Bobby looked from his sister to Andi, then back at his sister.

"It's OK, Bobby." Riley spoke up, "Andi and I can help you. You can trust us." Andi hoped that Riley's words might sway Bobby to tell them their story.

Bobby blew out in frustration, making his hair lift up then land back down on his freckled nose. Andi noticed that he was long over due for a haircut.

"Joesphine. We call her Josie. We were in your barn to sleep."

"Yes." She nodded at him to continue.

"We ran away from the orphan train that came through your town a couple days ago. Me and my sisters, well, we just couldn't be separated."

He swallowed hard, "They are the only family I've got. Those orphanage people were goin’ to give us away to different folks, so we ran away the next chance we got. Which happened to be in your town, the orphan train is long gone by now. We were trying to find a place to sleep when he came in the barn," Bobby nodded towards Riley, "We thought he would find the orphan train and take us back there, so I kicked him in the knee and Josie tied him up."

Just then, Izzy started fussing in her high chair. "I'll be right back," Andi said as she went to hold Izzy. She walked her to the other room and rocked her back to sleep, praying for a solution. What do we do with these kids, Lord? They need to be loved. They need a real family. They need a place to call home.

What do you think is going to happen next? I guess you'll have to wait for the next post to find out what happens in Part 5! Comment Below, how did you like part 4?

A Place to Call Home // Part 3

A Place to Call Home // Part 3

"Of course my offer still stands!" Andi smiled at the children, "While the chili is heated, why don't you snack on some corn bread."

She led them to the table and they sat down without a word. The middle child licked his lips when Andi brought over the corn bread with honey.

"Sure looks good, ma'am!"

His excitement made Riley chuckle from across the room, still guarding the door.

"What's your name, young man?" Riley asked.

The little boy scrunched his nose before replying, "They call me Bobby. This is my little sister, Nora, she's five but she doesn't talk. And then there's Joe, my older si--sibling," he stuttered.

Joe cleared his through from across the table, a signal to stop talking which Bobby ignored.

"Look mister," Bobby spoke to Riley, "we didn't want to tie you up, we just didn't have enough time to hide before you saw us. We weren't gonna cause no trouble, just sleep in the hay for the night. We didn't want you to take us back to--"

"Shut your mouth, Bobby!" Joe snapped in a low voice.

"Where's your family, Bobby?" Riley asked, then immediately regretted his question at the pain it caused across the boy's face.

Andi sat Izzy in her high chair, then brought the warm chili from the stove to the table. All was quiet as Andi and Riley watched the kids slurp up their food. These children have to be orphans. Do they have any relatives? How did they get to Memory Creek Ranch? Andi pondered the unanswered questions. She wasn't sure what to do with these needy kids that God brought to her for care.

Once spoons scraped the empty bowls, Andi broke the silence.

"Well, then. You three will stay with us for the night. We don't have a guest bedroom, but I'll get some blankets and make some pallets on the floor for you all to sleep on. Trust me, it will be better than sleeping in the barn."

Joe quickly jumped to attention, almost knocking over his chair as he stood, "Oh, no need, ma'am. We will be on our way now. Thanks for the chili." He grabbed Nora's hand and pulled her to her feet. Bobby also stood and followed Joe.

"Now wait a minute, here." Riley stood in their way of the door, "No body is going anywhere tonight. We can help--"

Riley was interrupted by Joe who leapt from where he had been standing and body-slammed him, catching Riley by surprise.

"Run!" Joe screamed to his little brother and sister. They scrambled for the door, but Andi was quicker. She grabbed both of the kids by their arms, holding them back. Riley--stronger than the ten year old-- held the thrashing Joe at arms length. Blocking a punch, Riley was not expecting a kick to the same knee that Bobby had busted earlier.

He fought the pain by gritting his teeth, "Joe, calm down!"

Joe took that moment to wiggle free from Riley's grip. In a attempt to stop Joe, Riley knocked of his hat and bright red hair tumbled out around Joe's shoulders. He was a she!

Who called that plot twist? *raises hand* Are you excited to read more of these kids' story? Stay tuned for part 4! Comment below!

A Place to Call Home // Part 2

A Place to Call Home // Part 2

Taking one last look at Izzy's closed bedroom door, Andi hoped she was making the right decision as she slipped on her boots and grabbed a lantern. She hurried outside, following the frantic dog.

Andi could only see within the glow of the lantern's halo as Tucker led her to the barn. The night was still, only a few crickets broke the silence. One hand gripping the lantern, she tried opening the barn door. It was stuck.

"Riley? Are you in there? What's wrong?"

Pressing her ear against the rough wood, Andi heard a faint squeaky voice, "What should we do now?"

"Who is that?" She demanded.

No reply.

Confused, Andi shoved on the door harder. It only budged slightly. Determination fueled her as she counted to three. With all her might, Andi threw her shoulder into the stubborn door. She heard what might have been a stick breaking, then she tumbled through the opened door and onto the straw covered ground inside.

"What in the world! Riley, what happened?" Andi staggered to her feet, horrified and shocked at the sight of her husband gagged and tired to the hayloft ladder. She didn't even notice the three young children, until a boy waved at her, his expression imitating the face of one who got caught with their hand in the cookie jar. A mixture of guilt, alarm, and urgency to run. Like a foul spooked by Izzy's loud banging on toys.

"We don't mean him no harm, ma'am. Only wanted to get away." The boy who spoke was probably seven or eight years old.

Not even trying to figure out what the little boy meant, Andi rushed up to Riley and untied the sloppily knotted ropes. Once he was free, Riley doubled over and gripped his right knee.

"Better watch out for that one, Andi, he has a mean kick--"

Andi cut him off, speaking so fast her words were barely audible, "Who are these kids and where did they come from and Riley, how in the world did they tie you up?

"Good questions, but right now, it doesn't matter as much as where are they now?" Riley pointed to the opened barn door, his eyes scanning the now-empty barn.

The three children were gone.

Riley groaned in frustration, "We have to find them. Those little rascals caught me off guard while I was doing the chores. They kicked me in the knee and had me tied up faster than I could blink." he looked at Andi's slightly amused face.

She couldn't help the smile that formed on her lips. He continued his tale, "It's not that funny... they were quicker and stronger than they looked. Anyway, they gagged me before I could holler. I don't know why, but they were scared of something. Do you think they were scared of me?"

"Goodness, where do you think they came from? There’s not another homestead within miles from here, and I have never seen them before. We have to find them. It's not safe for children to be out roaming at night, there are too many cougars. Lets go get another lantern an check on Izzy before we start our search. they couldn't have gotten far."

Andi supported Riley as he hobbled back to their cabin. His knee was already swollen. As they came up the front steps to the cabin, they heard banging and clanging. Then Izzy's cries came to Andi's ears and her heart jolted her legs into motion. She barged into the cabin.

What a mess!

Broken glass, open cupboards, and three small children stuffing food into a flour sack. They looked up, caught for a second time.

"Riley, close the door." She whispered with more than a touch of urgency in her voice. Andi knew they were going to try and bolt again.

"It's ok. We aren't going to hurt you." Andi spoke in the same tone she normally would use with a skittish foul, "My name is Andrea Prescott, what are your names? If you're hungry, I can make you some food. How does chili and corn bread sound? I have some leftovers I can warm up for you." Andi kept talking, but her feet were moving in the direction of Izzy. The poor child had a very rude awakening and she was none too happy about it. She quickly retrieved the blubbering baby and bounced her on her hip to sooth her tears away.

When she returned, all three children looked at her like she was crazy.

The oldest boy looked to be about ten years old. With distrust written on his face, he glared at her.

"We aint want any of yer leftovers." He said, deepening his glare. It was a lie, and they all knew it.

Andi continued her bouncing, "So, you are willing to steal our food, but you don't want to eat it when I offer it to you?"

Getting ready to argue, the boy opened his mouth but then clamped it closed when he saw the look on his little sisters face. Andi looked at the girl also, and for the first time, she saw the tattered dress and matted red hair. She has to be no more than five years old. She looks so tired, and skinny as a rail. Andi wondered when had been the last time these children had eaten a full meal.

The youngest of the two boys' large shirt hung over his pants like a dress, his bright red hair made his eyes look greener and his freckles pop.

"Joe, I think we should eat the lady's food." He whispered to the oldest who had a missing strap on his overalls and the same red hair tucked under a floppy hat.

"Fine. We'll stay and eat your food. If your offer still stands."

Poor Riley! Were you expecting that plot twist? Lol, how did you like part two? Are you excited for part three? Comment below!

A Place to Call Home // Part 1

A Place to Call Home // Part 1

August 20, 1888
Memory Creek Ranch

Since baby Izzy's birthday party was over, the family had all left for the night. Twenty year old Andrea Prescott yawned and stretched. What a day! I can't believe my baby girl is one year old, she's growing so fast!

Andi remembered the first time Izzy--named after her mother, Elisabeth Carter--said the word, "Mama." What a happy memory.

Riley had been so jealous that their daughter had said mama before saying daddy, but he'd been thrilled when she had said "Dada" not more than a few days later.

Sound asleep, Izzy peacefully sucked her thumb while Andi rocked her. Knowing this would be her only chance to get some work done, Andi carefully stood and walked her over to the crib. She smiled down at her daughter's sweet face. Izzy didn't stir once as Andi gently set her down on the thick quilts.

Catching a glimpse in the other room of the dishes piled high in the kitchen sink, Andi knew she better get to it. The dishes won't clean themselves. She rolled up her sleeves and was careful not to wake the baby as she tiptoed out of Izzy's room into the kitchen.

Andi put on a pot of hot cocoa for when Riley would come in from doing the evening animal chores. Every night, after the days work was complete, Riley and Andi would often sit at the kitchen table with a cup of hot cocoa or tea. It was kind of like an unspoken tradition they had with each other.

An hour passed. By now, it was completely dark outside. Andi had the dishes sparkling and was impatiently waiting at the table, foot tapping, while Riley's cup of hot cocoa was cooling. He should be in by now... How long can it take to milk a couple of cows and feed the chickens?

Andi was torn, she needed to go find Riley and make sure he was alright, but she didn't want to leave Izzy unattended in the house by herself. What if she wakes up and figures out a way to get out of her crib? No, I can't leave her by herself. Riley is probably just looking for a runaway calf or something.

Hoping her guess was right, Andi got her knitting out. Maybe she could work on her knitting pattern without missing any stitches this time. It would only have taken her one hundred tries... knitting was not her strong suit.

~~~
"Tucker? Is that you, boy?"
Surprised that their dog would be so urgent to get into the house--and silently praying that his loud bark would not wake Izzy--Andi threw her knitting aside and opened the front door.
The panting dog lunged inside and spun circles. Barking one minute, running to the door, then back to Andi. Something was wrong. Tucker never acted this berserk. Where's Riley?
How did you like the first installment of A Place to Call Home? Do you like cliffhangers? Comment below your guess to where Riley is!
Update, Announcement, and Send Chocolate
Hey everyone! Hope you all had a great June! And today, it's a brand new month... Whew, I can't even believe it is already July! Any Fourth of July plans?
Well, this July, we are going to do things a little differently. Usually when I participate in Nano through April, July, and November, I take a hiatus from blogging, but this month, I have something planned to post.
Also, I just wanted to bring y'all up to date: I've decided to join The Kings Daughters Writing Camp. It's a Christian alternative to NanoWriMo and I'm super excited to have such a wide support group of individuals to cheer me on this month.
But enough of that jazz, here are a couple things to keep y'all updated.
Update:: Third Chances
Most of you know that I've been working a lot on my WIP (work in progress) titled Third Chances! Well, I'm super close to being finished with the first draft, and I'm really hoping to make some progress this July. Prayers would be appreciated. I'm really wanting God to use this story, and sometimes I feel inadequate. But I know that He has a plan for my writing journey, and I'll just let Him guide my pen so to speak.
But ya'll deserve an Update on Third Chances.
Here's an updated blurb (it's changed a lot! And it still needs some polishing...)
Is it too late for Third Chances at faith, love, and forgiveness?
Aimee Hope Bernard returns from veterinary technician college with low hopes of reconciliation with her mother.  But she's desperate, and returning home is the only option.  If her disaster of a childhood taught her anything, it was to be prepared for any situation.  Only, there are some things in life that she just couldn't possibly prepare for.  When she is truly down to nothing, God shows her that He is up to something when He opens doors, opportunities, and opens her heart to love and forgiveness.
Colt James Langston is the oldest of seven siblings in his family and takes it upon himself to be the one responsible after the painful death of his father.  Weighted with hospital bills and the devastating news of foreclosure, Colt and his family set out on a journey seeking a new lifestyle.  They find themselves renting a rundown farm from a old family friend in Marysville, Kansas.  When a chance encounter with a pretty hitch hiker becomes more than happenstance, Colt begins to have second thoughts about the promise he made to himself after his father passed away.  As time goes on, he learns the importance of having faith in testing trials. His newly found faith in God might just move the mountains in his life after all.
When faith, family, and trust are put to the test, will it be enough to last through to the other side of hardship?  Join these two young adults as they journey a path that will lead them to the conclusion that God is a God of Third Chances.
Blog Announcement:: The Forgotten Story
Now, while Third Chances is not finished, I do have a story to share with ya'll. In order to spend more time writing TC, I am going to be posting an already finished short story. I wrote a Circle C Milestones fan story for a contest, and although it didn't place, it still has a special memory for me. Well, *laughs* actually, I forgot about this story. I didn't remember it until I was cleaning out my desk and found a copy! Lol, so for the month of July, I will be sharing this story with y'all. It has seven parts, and will last throughout the month. It's a rather deep and funny story that I am super happy to share with my fellow Andi Carter fans! I tried to keep it to be as closer to the original form, though I changed some typos.
The way I see it, it's a win win win. Before I found this story (Titled: A Place to Call Home), I was going to have to take a hiatus from Showers of Blessings. But now, the blog gets to stay running, I get a break from blogging, and Third Chances still gets to be written!
On to more important business...
Send Chocolate:: Jk, jk
So, I'm just kidding. Kinda.
Send virtual, inspiration chocolate down in the comments below to cheer me on this month. I really want to finish the first draft of Third Chances!
Any plans this July? Are you going to be writing up a storm?
Are you excited to read A Place to Call Home? Comment below!
Many Blessings,
