Undercover Traitor

I wrote this piece of flash fiction a long while back. One day, I was reading over some of my stories and this one caught my eye. I thought it was worth sharing because who doesn't want to read a story with a gang member by the name of "Bumblebee" in it?! lol.

 Undercover Traitor

The undercover agent reached for a cigarette inside his secondhand leather jacket. The whole scenario made him hide a grin. He didn’t like to smoke, never could tolerate the intoxicating smell of the stuff. Plus, he had never worn a black biker jacket before this assignment. He played cowboy a lot better than a dangerous gang member.

Hank Lawfrey had been undercover on multiple assignments over the years of his employment, but this case was by far the hardest. It had been six weeks working with the gang who called themselves by the ridiculous name: “The Snakebite Gang.”

By now, he was ready to reveal himself and get this case solved so he could return to his ranch, his beautiful wife, and their growing family. The last he’d heard, their twins Emma and Kelly, were approaching their third birthday… and he was going to miss it. What a lame father I’ve turned out to be. Just like my own old man, he thought to himself.

He’d tried many times to justify his undercover job which kept him from home, saying that he was making the world a better place for his little Emma and Kelly to grow up in, but that didn’t change the facts. The girls needed a father that was present. He wasn’t, and that was about to change. As soon as he finished this assignment.

If I could only catch them redhanded, then I could be out of here. His irritation grew towards the gang members. If they’d only make their move. He was waiting on the “Jackpot” robbery to turn them in so he could be sure they would be sentenced to life in prison. The chief of police was counting on his inside information.

Bumblebee, Oxford, Switchblade, and PJ were all gathered around in a dark alleyway that had a stench like rotten eggs—no, much worse than that. They passed the time playing a card game, even though they all were flat broke. They all thought that would change after tonight’s heist.

“Hey, Smokey,” PJ’s voice rasped Hanks gang name from his spot on a overturned crate, “You wanna play or ya just gonna stand over there and smoke the whole time?”

Hank held his cigarette between his first and third fingers, he blew the smoke from his lips, and tried not to gag from it. “Naw, I don’t play.”

From the looks on their faces, maybe he should have lied and just winged a game or two, but he was no gambler.

“I’ll keep watch.” He said, hoping that was a good enough excuse to stand at the alleyway entrance. For my signal, he mentally added.

The gang talked amongst themselves, nodding occasionally in his direction. Their scrutiny creating a uneasy feeling that washed over him.

Bumblebee—the unusual gang name derived from his odd tattoo of a bumblebee on his bicep—ambled over to where Hank stood, his bulky form towering over Hanks lean one. Although Bumblebee reminded Hank of a big teddy bear, he couldn’t underestimate the larger man’s strength… he would not want to get on his bad side, that was for sure. He’d seen what the man was capable of.

“Dude, do you know what they are saying about you over there?” Bumblebee questioned, swiping his brow with his beefy forearm. The heat in the alleyway was stifling.

“Don’t care.” Hank responded, continuing with his rough façade.

“Yeah, well you should. They say you aren’t really one of us.” His words were laced with a challenge, “So what are you going to do about it?”

If Bumblebee was trying to intimidate him, Hank wasn’t going to show that it was working. The truth would come out tonight when Snakebite, the gang leader, came back from his “errand.” Hank had already decided that when his team could back him, this gang was going to get busted. Tonight.

Only then he could return to his ranch and become the father that he’d never had. His wife and girls deserved that. It was time for him to settle down and stop chasing the bad guys.

His thoughts were interrupted by a light that blinked from across the street in a store window, indicating that their operation was going according to plan. He’d waited for this moment for a long time and he wasn’t going to blow it.

Hank looked Bumblebee in the eye, it was the bigger man’s turn to squirm now, “They say I’m a traitor. Maybe I am. Maybe I don’t care.”

What did ya'll think? It ended with somewhat of a cliffhanger so I guess you’ll have to use your imagination to finish it! Any feedback for me? (Do you like the graphic I made for this story?!)

The prompt was something like: “You say I’m a traitor. Maybe I am.”

~Podcasts~

Raise your hand if you like listening to podcasts! Are there a couple hands up? Okay good, because today I will be sharing some of my favorite podcasts with y'all!

Now, before I begin, I'll start by saying how I used to not be a fan of podcasts. I felt like they were a waste of time. Why listen to someone ramble on when I could be listening to music and having my own little jam session? After all, when do you have time to listen to podcasts anyway? I can do much more multitasking with music than with deep conversation! However, I can across a couple podcasts that may have changed my  opinion...

In this post I'll be sharing some favorite podcasts* as well as some tips on when are the best times to listen to them. (I don't know where you listen to your music/podcasts, but I use Spotify.)

*Note, I have not listened to all episodes so cannot endorse all content by these podcasts.

~~~
Why They Did That
This was the first podcast that really caught my attention. It has some really great stories and it breaks down Bible stories in a relatable and interactive way!
About: "the Bible can seem boring, but not if you ask thee right questions. Why They Did That explores the motivations of biblical characters and how their choices can guide yours." There are so many episodes, but one that was one of my favorites was Duty or Devotion. It talked about Martha. We first found this podcast after we heard Dean Cullinane speak at a conference we attended.
The Overflow Podcast
I've currently listened to all of these episodes and think they have a lot of good points. So so good!
About: "So many of us are emotionally exhausted--we're in stale or broken relationships and we aren't reaching out potential. But no one should have to struggle with these challenges. Your hosts, Karl Lindsay and Filip Milosavljevic want to help you to live a more abundant and overflowing life. The Overflow Podcast will take you on a personal journey based in Scripture towards emotional and spiritual growth that will impact you and all those you're in relationship with." I first came across this podcast when to friends recommended it.
Favorite Episode: "Ep 23 How to Live with Intention"
WHOA: That's Good Podcast
I've listened to a few of these and they have a fun vibe! Sadie is herself, fun and enthusiastic. (Although, I’m not a fan of the “commercials”...)
About: "The "WHOA That's Good" podcast welcomes you into meaningful conversations with authors, athletes, musicians, speakers, and starts of film and television in search of the answers to just one question: What is the best advice you have ever been given? Hosted by Sadie Roberston..."
Taste for Truth
This podcast is all about health, fitness, and losing weight.
About: "Join us on the Taste for Truth Podcast as we go to God for help with weight loss. We'll have victory interviews, coaching interviews, author interviews, tips, and even opportunities to renew your mind while you're listening to the podcast. My goal is to encourage you and equip you to break free from the control of food with God's help.
Choose Grace Podcast
This podcast is brand new and I love supporting young people who have started their own podcasts!
About: "I will feature many inspiring people from all walks of life and a variety of ages where they will answer, 'what is your biggest challenge in your life right now, and what are you doing to overcome it?' I want to keep it real and I want to keep it fun while at the same time discussing some of life's biggest challenges. My goal is to help people work through their challenges with grace and a whole lot of God."
Oh Beloved One
Amanda Michelle Brown has lots of good topics covered in her podcast!
About: "We're dedicated to sharing practical resources that aid young women (like YOU) in their spiritual walks."
~~~

When to listen to podcasts:

--> On a walk
Go for a walk and let a podcast keep you company. This could be on lunch break or just for a short morning/evening exercise. Kill two birds with one stone... you get to get some fresh air (and sunshine) while listening to a conversation that will more than likely challenge you to grow!

--> On a run
When I'm on a run, it's best to keep my mind anywhere else besides on my heavy breathing and burning legs. A podcast makes for a great solution because instead of thinking about your misery (XD) you are thinking about what the podcast has to say. I prefer music when I run just because of the needed motivation, but everyone is different so you should give it a try and see if it works for you!

--> Long car rides
If you are in the car by yourself, or if you are on a long road trip, a podcast might help pass the time! Same goes for music or an audio book.

--> In the morning
I know this sounds like the worse time of day to listen to a 45 minute podcast, but hear me out. I set my alarm for 5:52. (tbh, I have no idea why I set my alarm for that specific time... I'm weird.) Ahem, anyway, I aim to start my workout at 7am. That gives me exactly an hour and eight minutes to get my act together. To do my morning devotion, get dressed, etc. I've found that in order to wake up slowly without falling back asleep, I'll turn on a podcast. This also works out nicely because I don't have to strain my eyes to read right off in the morning. By the time the podcast is over, I have roughly 20-30 minutes to get around before I workout. Anyway, this has been working out really well for me.

--> While you clean
Again, I'm kinda more of a music gal when it comes to cleaning. But--if I'm in the right mood, cleaning while listening to a podcast sounds like a great way to be productive while multitasking!

Lastly, if you are interested in checking out my Spotify for music playlists and other podcasts, find "Ben" (aka me) at this link here!

Multi Media Tag

Hey ya'll! Today's post is super fun because (1) it's a tag and (2) both Rebekah and I will be posting our answers to this tag on the same day! Be sure to check out her answers at her blog HERE!

Also, I want to give a huge thanks and shoutout to my sweet blogger friend, Liberty, who tagged me! <3 I won't be tagging anyone in todays post, but if this tag sounds fun to you, feel free to steal it! XD

Now, lets begin!

1. A Song That Describes You in Some Way

2020 really impacted me with the word Wildflower. So, because I can't think of any other song atm to describe me, I'll choose this one:

2. A Movie That Inspires You

Mom's Night Out! Just the theme of realizing the beauty of life's "messy" seasons. Definitely recommend watching it for a fun, funny, family friendly, and all around great movie! (I am in need of a rewatch!)

3. A Book That the Main Character is Like You

Hmmm, I can usually relate to a little bit of each MC. But, the book I'm reading right now, the main character has pretty bad stage fright. That's me! The only reason I get up front for youth group songs at church is because our church is so small that it's not like a stage.

4. A Song That You Love

Ahhhhhhhhh! How can I pick? I love music so much and literally have so many favorite songs. *goes to look at my Spotify playlists* But if I had to just pick one... um... well... One Boy, One Girl is SUPER SWEET AND *MELTS* Idk! I'll just mention that one for now, but know that I have 3847833648 favorites that I could mention.

oh, and:

5. A Movie That You Love

SUE THOMAS F.B.EYE!!! Go watch it if you haven't seen it already! (Also, Doc and Road to Avonlea, etc.)

6. A Book That You Love

I really liked Love Finds You in Sundance Wyoming. Goodness, same thing as with the songs tho...

I. Have. So. Many!

7. A Song You Do Not Like

*grins* I have a ton of songs that I do like, but then again, lots that I don't like. I do NOT like H.O.L.Y. by Florida Georgia Line. I feel it is sacrilegious. tbh, I only have a handful of songs by FGL that I like. *hides from my cousins*

As much as I love country, I can actually think of quite a few country songs that I most likely will skip...

8. A Movie You Do Not Like

Huh.

Any Hallmark that makes me gag.

&&

I did not like Up. Or Wall-E.

Honestly, there's a lot of bad movies out there. Sometimes we don't even finish them. I rly hate movies that are a waste of time.

9. A Book You Do Not Like

I did not like Fire and Ice by Mary Connealy (romance). I didn't like The Greatest Find by Paige Winship Dooly (boring). I didn't like A Moonbow Night by Laura Frantz (slow). I didn't like Kiera by Kate Willis (genre). I didn't like The Icecutter's Daughter by Tracie Peterson (can't remember much other than it just wasn't my fav.)

10. A Song That Makes You Happy

(I'm not even going to try and explain why I couldn't have picked just one song...)

*shrugs* lots of songs make me happy I guess. Lol XD

11. A Movie That Freaked You Out

Theres been a couple murder mysteries that have freaked me out... But I can't remember the titles. I also thought the Truman Show was weird. I don't typically watch shows that I know will freak me out bc, sadly I'm sensitive and they will keep me up. *facepalm*

(Fun fact: I don’t like this about myself. But lately, I have just been reminding myself that if being “cool” means watching movies that aren’t worth my time, then it’s not worth it to be cool.)

12. A Book That Made You Cry

Always Remembered by Janelle Mowery. (So sad abt the Alamo. I think one chapter actually had me crying. But I srsly don't cry unless it's super duper sad.)

13. A Song You Listened to a Lot When You Were Younger

VeggieTales silly songs. Roy Rogers. Mary Ann Kennedy.

14. A Movie You Watched a Lot When You Were Younger

Curious George. Spirit. Little House on the Prairie. Father Murphy. Ma and Pa Kettle. Gilligan's Island. Greene Acres. Racing Stripes. Yogi Bear. Horse Crazy (1 and 2). Second Chances. etc!

15. A Book You Read a Lot When You Were Younger

Pony Pals. Sisters in Time series. Circle C Adventures!!!

16. A Song That Irritates You

10,000 Hours (collaboration with Dan + Shay and Justin Bieber). Country Girl (Luke Bryan). Just to name a couple...

17. A Movie That Kept You on the Edge of Your Seat

National Treasure! (Also Midway was very intense in a different sorta way.)

18. A Book That Left You Breathless

Freedom by Faith Potts! Just cause I love that book *heart eyes* Also, Through Waters Deep is awesome!!

19. A Song You Listen to When You Can't Sleep

If I can't sleep, I'll turn on my Christian music playlist. Here are a few on the list:

20. A Comfort Movie

Anne of Green Gables! 'Cause, its just a classic that I actually don't mind and really like!

21. A Comfort Book

The Bible... *wink wink* duh.

22. A Song by an Artist You Won't Normally Listen To

23. A Book You Didn't Expect to Love

The Wells Fargo Trail series by Jim Walker. I wouldn't say I "love" it, but I'm surprised at how much I did like it... the whole series has a lot of violence (fist fight kinda thing) but yeah, it's still a series that I'm glad I read even though I typically don't recommend it to people. Idk if that makes sense. *headdesk*

24. A Movie That You Shockingly Loved

Not gonna answer this one. *winks*

Ok, wait, I actually do have one I can mention: Karate Kid!

25. Current On-Repeat Song

Guys! What's up with these hard song related questions! How about a ALWAYS on-repeat artist: Carrie Underwood!

26. Currently Reading

This is a easy one. I'm currently reading (and really liking) Through Waters Deep by Sarah Sundin. I'm also reading the Bible cover to cover (I dare you to join me!) and I'm at Deuteronomy.

P.S. I just finished Through Waters Deep!

27. Currently Watching

Currently watching The Andy Griffith Show and When Calls the Heart. Oh, and Tough as Nails.

~~~
WELL, that was a lot of questions and didn't learn anything new from this post, at least you know I have too many songs to just pick one! <3
What is a movie you watched when you were younger? Do you have a song that irritates you? What are you currently reading? Comment below and lets talk books & movies & books!
P.S. How have you been?? What are you up to? I'm currently enjoying my spring break!
Book Series Spotlight & Review
Hey luvs!
I don't know how many of you remember THIS POST back in June 2020, featuring the Wings of Glory book series by Sarah Sundin. Today's post is going to be the same just with a new series!
I'll be sharing my individual reviews for this trilogy as well as a review of the series as a whole.
I got these books gifted to my by my dear sis so I had all three paperbacks!
Book one I read from start to finish: 07/10/20 - 07/13/20 (three days!)
Book two I read from start to finish: 07/15/20 - 07/21/20 (seven days!)
Book three I read from start to finish: 12/09/20 - 01/02/21 (twenty-six days...)
Flights of Fancy
⭑⭑⭑⭑⭒
4 1/2 Stars!
"When you can read a book in 3 days after a reading slump of months, you know it's a good book!
Honestly, when I read the first three chapters, I wasn't sure I was going to like it. The first chapters for me were more like a 2 star rating. But then, then there was a (quite hilarious) first impression of the two main characters. Ah, yes. One that was totally unrealistic but totally entertaining and I just had to see how her employment at Glory Manor would pan out. I must say, both of the main characters grew on me until realized how much I was enjoying this fun read! This book reminded me how much I love to smile and laugh while reading.
It was a lighthearted story with deep lessons learned. Funny events that I honestly could kinda relate to. (I've never had Buttercup in the house, but I have had my fair share of chickens, goats, and mini horses in the house!)
I love that the farm loved their animals. (I'm not sure how realistic it was for the timeframe...) And naming the animals was so cute. Also, the four children in this story was adorable and it would not have been the same without them. (They reminded me of my own short story!)
I found this book to be somewhat unrealistic for the time period, but it didn't bother me because I wasn't going into the book hoping it would be perfectly historical. I just needed a fun read! And it was! It was also interesting to learn about the business side of things.
The writing style was different, but really good!
The romance wasn't my top favorite by any means, but I think the characters matured so much in the end. At first, it was so much about physical appearance that it was SO annoying to me. But then, their relationship went deeper and their purposes in life changed who they were. (They were pretty perfect for each other!) There was a typical miscommunication at the end, but even though it was predictable at times, it was enough excitement for me to finish this book past midnight. And that says a lot for a climax of a story.
It's a story about finding your true purpose and identity. Often God's plan is different than what the world views as successful and important. But trust me, God's plan is far wilder and far more important than you, I, or society could even dream up!
In the end, I'm so glad to have read this story and glad to have been gifted this series! Thanks sis!"
Diamond in the Rough
⭑⭑⭑⭒
3 1/2 Star Rating
"Book two in the American Heiresses series was such a fun read!
Poppy was my favorite character (I also loved Beatrix and can't wait for her book!) But Reginald was just OK for me. I didn't really get into his character that much.
I loved how Poppy spoke her mind and was completely honest about each situation. Not caring what others thought. I laughed so hard when she flung the snail across the room, and getting to read about each bit of "mayhem" she caused was "quite" entertaining! Her desire to help those less fortunate was also a nice addition to Poppy's character.
Murray played and interesting role in the story. Sometimes I found his character amusing, while other times he seemed like he really didn't fit in with the storyline besides being friends with Poppy.
I really liked the character development of Viola (Poppy's grandma) and how she changed from when the book first began.
I wish there was some more faith content in this book. And I felt like the plot was a continuous roller coaster of small incidents but nothing big happened until the end where I felt like it was rushed.
I liked reading book one just a tad more. I think that has a lot to do with the fact that I like reading books set in a country setting apposed to the city and Society Life written about in book two.
I definitely enjoyed Diamond in the Rough and look forward to reading book three! Thanks for reading my review!"
Storing Up Trouble
⭑⭑⭑⭒⭒
Just made a 3 star rating
"Storing Up Trouble was a read that I had a hard time deciding the star rating for.
Maybe I had my hopes set too high. It was a slight disappointment. Somehow I was expecting it to be funnier. More interesting. And more exciting because of the snapshots of Beatrix's character from the other book.
It was pretty slow... (something that is not entirely bad). But it didn't grab for my attention like book one. I felt like the many side characters kinda took away form the main characters. And once again, I liked the side characters better (Theo!)
Norman was a odd man. Lol, this added to the story. I'd say his character changed the most. He started out very scientific and self centered, and towards the end, changed drastically. Caring for his niece and showing random acts of kindness...
Beatrix was spunky. She cut to the chase and knew what she wanted. She had a kind heart and didn't let what others thought of her to effect who she knew she was. (Similar to Poppy's character).
Their romance was just OK for me. I didn't really feel they had a strong connection. Always being "annoyed" with each other.
The cast of characters seemed overwhelming. And I found it hard to remember who was who because many were just mentioned a few times but never really expounded upon.
The plot, again, was just "meh" for me. And the "bad guys" were what you'd find in a Mandie movie. Irritated with each other and confessing it all right at the very end. Not a serious threat...
Despite being disappointed with some of the major things in this book, I enjoyed the overall story and by no means is it's content bad. I liked how it talked about some of the other characters from the previous books (I love it when series tie together!!) I also liked how she worked as a salesgirl to really understand the cause she supported. Lastly, I liked Beatrix's heart for helping the women who were at a disadvantage... just because they were women.
It was interesting to see a book placed that timeframe. I got a small taste of what things could have even like."
American Heiresses Series
⭑⭑⭑⭒
3 1/2 Star Rating
Overall, this series was a fun adventure! The covers are AMAZING and I love how they all match so well!!! *heart eyes*
The main characters were fairly similar in each book. The women were American Heiresses, but not snobs and wanted to use their inheritance to support others less fortunate. There were funny parts in each book. I love it when you can get a kick out of the characters and their situations they find themselves in! I also liked the animals in each book (the cow in book one and the cats in book two!) Plus, there was some side characters that I loved getting to know as well. Another thing in book two and three were the girls having guy friends but not romantically involved. This was cool to see because most fiction books don't do this.
I'm looking forward to reading more books by this new-to-me author!
I'd definitely recommend this series for someone looking to read a lighthearted adventure showcasing unlikely characters set towards a future of service and hope!
Have you ever read this series before? Have you read any other books by Jen Turano? What is the last book you read that made you laugh out loud?? Comment Below!
Q&A & Giveaway Winner
Hey y'all! Thanks so much for submitting questions (awesome questions btw) for my THREE YEAR BLOGGING Q&A!! I still can't believe that I've been blogging for 3 years. But thanks for following along! I hope you enjoy the Q&A and don't forget to scroll all the way to the end to see who won the 3 giveaway prizes!!!
P.S. since I don't have everyone's email address to contact winners, please email me at: windsoffaithco@gmail.com to claim your prize (and we can work out the details to get your prize mailed to you!)
Q&A
1. If you could invite 3 people to dinner who would they be? (It could be friends, celebrities, Bible characters, book characters, etc.)
Ohh, great question! Hmm, I suppose i'd invite a few online friends over! (book characters would be fun too, but I can't think of any atm...)
2. If you could witness 3 historical events what would they be?
I'd want to witness discovering America, the pony express (or Oregon Trail), and just the timeframe that my Papa grew up in.
3. What is your favorite summer activity?
I like a lot of things in summer! Gardening, swimming, biking, kayaking, jet skiing, hiking, etc!
4. What’s your all time favorite book?
Girllll, that question is illegal in the bookworm community!!! Lets just say, I've narrowed down my all time favorite books to about 10! lol!
5. What is your favorite holiday?
This one's easy for me: Thanksgiving & Forth of July. Christmas too, bc everyone is in such good moods.
6. What's the craziest/weirdest thing you ever eaten?
Let's see, my favorite protein powder is sweetened with jackfruit. Is that crazy enough?
7. What is your favorite "old" tv show? (50s, 60s, 70s or 80s)
Some of my favorite "old" shows/movies are: Little House on the Prairie, The Waltons, Father Murphy, Ma and Pa Kettle, Greene Acres, The Andy Griffith Show, Roy Rogers, etc!
8. You are going on a road trip and can only take 3 items. What would they be? =)
Fun question! I'd take food (probably snacks for the road), a book (something exciting), and a pocket knife (cause you never know).
9. What is your favorite thing about horses? :)
I love how they are a team with their rider... it's up to us to build that trust as a good leader. They also teach their owners so many things that can help them in life. So many lessons to be learned from your horse!
10. What is your favorite type of pie? Why?
I have a couple favorite pies! I REALLY like French silk pie. And the best French silk pie I've had is from Village Inn in Florida. I also like cherry pie (with ice cream!!), and a sugar free blueberry pie that my Auntie makes! Oh, and peanut butter pie!!!
11. How many blankets are on your bed?
I have *goes and checks* 4 blankets on my bed! I live in the basement, so it gets cold down here! I also have a cool water heated mattress pad!
12. How many followers do you want by the end of the year?
If I could get to 100, that would be cool. But honestly, I don't really care about my numbers on this blog. It's all about if people are reading the content not necessarily how many followers I can get.
13. What is your least favorite post you posted? (and is still on the blog)
My least favorite... hmm, THIS one probably just because of the terribly unprofessional and childish graphics. I was playing around with my new phone and they were fun to make but I probably should have kept them to myself... *cringe* *whispers* Graphic designers have to start somewhere!
14. How long do you want to blog? Do you plan on going for another 3 year?
Good question!! I love having a blog, so don't see myself quitting any time soon. Although I don't know if I see this particular blog up and running for the next 3 years. Right now, I'm really business with school and life. Maybe in the future, I'll have a blog for my writing platform. Or maybe a more professional lifestyle platform. But right now, it's not my most priority to start another blog. Showers of Blessings is and always will be special because it's where sharing my writing all started. But, I can't guarantee I'll keep it active for the next 3 years. Hope that answered your question! <3
15. Does all the milk for your goat milk soap come from Lily? Or do you get it from elsewhere so you have steady supply?
It does not. We used Lily's milk for that first year but eventually we had to buy more milk. Sometimes we do get local milk.
16. What is your favorite music group?!
I'm not sure my favorite music "group" but my favorite genres are: Contemporary Christian, Country, some Jazz and some Soft Rock. Really, I love music to sing to while cleaning, in the car, etc!
One of my favorite artists is Carrie Underwood!
17. What is your favorite activity for a snowy day?
If it's a snowy day at the first of winter, I like going outside! Sledding, "ice skating" on our creek, playing a game called The Tracking Game, and snow skiing is fun too. But if it's been snowing for a while, I'd like to just stay inside by the fire with hot chocolate!
