A Place to Call Home // Part 4

A Place to Call Home // Part 4

"You're a girl!" Riley was shocked.

Standing with her arms crossed and with a withering glare pinned on Riley, Joe refused to speak. But she didn't have to speak for Andi to see that she was, indeed, not a boy.

"I told you someone would find out..." Bobby whined.

Andi blew out a exasperated breath, "I need some answers. Now."

She drug Bobby and Nora back to the table.

"Sit." Andi instructed with no room for argument, then turned to Joe.

"Come to the table. What is your real name, Joe?"

Head down, Joe seemed to find her tattered shoes very interesting at the moment. Andi knew that Joe would not be the one to leak any information about them, so she turned to the more talkative one.

"What is your sister's name, Bobby?" Andi looked at Joe who rolled her eyes, "And while you're at it, why don't you tell me why you were in our barn in the first place, and who you ran away from."

Unsure of how much to tell, Bobby looked from his sister to Andi, then back at his sister.

"It's OK, Bobby." Riley spoke up, "Andi and I can help you. You can trust us." Andi hoped that Riley's words might sway Bobby to tell them their story.

Bobby blew out in frustration, making his hair lift up then land back down on his freckled nose. Andi noticed that he was long over due for a haircut.

"Joesphine. We call her Josie. We were in your barn to sleep."

"Yes." She nodded at him to continue.

"We ran away from the orphan train that came through your town a couple days ago. Me and my sisters, well, we just couldn't be separated."

He swallowed hard, "They are the only family I've got. Those orphanage people were goin’ to give us away to different folks, so we ran away the next chance we got. Which happened to be in your town, the orphan train is long gone by now. We were trying to find a place to sleep when he came in the barn," Bobby nodded towards Riley, "We thought he would find the orphan train and take us back there, so I kicked him in the knee and Josie tied him up."

Just then, Izzy started fussing in her high chair. "I'll be right back," Andi said as she went to hold Izzy. She walked her to the other room and rocked her back to sleep, praying for a solution. What do we do with these kids, Lord? They need to be loved. They need a real family. They need a place to call home.

What do you think is going to happen next? I guess you'll have to wait for the next post to find out what happens in Part 5! Comment Below, how did you like part 4?

Many Blessings,
Brooklyne Elysse
