Over The Edge // Book Review

It's book review time again! Let's get right on to it!

About the book:

Trauma survivor Lindsey Barnes hasn't fully recovered from the ordeal that almost took her life, and now she's in the middle of another crisis. Not only is she the sole witness in a high-profile murder case, but someone is also pushing her to question her sanity.

Police detective Jack Tucker doesn't know what to make of her story, especially when her elusive enemy leaves no evidence behind to lend credence to her claims. Yet the more he gets to know the appealing personal chef, the more he's convinced someone is targeting not only her sanity, but her life.

And unless they can figure out who is behind the campaign to undermine her credibility, a murderer could slip away--leaving more than one body in his or her wake.

With her signature spellbinding style, the bestselling and award-winning "queen of inspirational romantic suspense" (Library Journal) delivers another riveting tale that will keep you turning pages long into the night.

My review:

3.5 stars!

Can we just take a moment to admire the masterpiece of a cover design? I always love an embossed title on the cover (okay, but just look how shiny it is)!! I also love the contrast between cool and warm colors, and the scull boat on the front. It fits the genre and it fits the story. As a reader and a designer, I always appreciate it when the cover ties in well with the story inside.

Now for the book, the characters were well developed and I enjoyed hearing their stories. I especially liked Lindsey. She was my favorite character. She had a strength about her, a willingness to be brave, and she didn't let her panic paralyze her in intense situations. Lindsey may have had a lot of traumatic experiences, but she didn't let that stop her from pursuing her hobbies (running and taking her scull boat out) and her career goals.

Jack Tucker had his own past trauma but his was long buried. With this character, I associate his famous chocolate mint squares (which sound amazing and I need whatever this culinary creation is in my life right now!) and his fear of heights. A fear that is rightfully there, but one he overcomes in the end...

I didn't have a chance to really have a favorite side character besides Jack's two sisters, they were perceptive and just plain awesome. But other than that, I was a bit suspicious of everyone else. I wasn't suspicious of Chad and Dara Allen much, more so the Eric character and Nolan that had me wondering what their roles were. I can't spoil the ending, but there was quite a plot twist!!

The plot was a bit slower than some suspense books I have read, but I didn't think it was too slow, just not as intense as I was expecting. However, the ending did not disappoint, and it had me wondering how Lindsey was going to get out of that situation.

Things I didn't care for: The romance part wasn't convincing to me, it felt a little forced. When the characters shared things with each other, it was all at once and I tend to like finding things out along the way instead of reading large blocks of backstory paragraphs. I didn't care for parts of the ending climax either, what ended up happening with the villains of the story wasn't what I would have chosen. I can't say this was my favorite suspense book, but I would definitely recommend it.

Overall, this was a quick read that had me staying up until 11pm one night to finish it! I am glad I got the chance to read and review this copy!

What is a book that had you staying up too late to finish?
Do you like reviewing book covers just as much as the story inside?
How is your fall?
